Let’s be honest about something right off the bat: nobody buys a leather vest thinking about the maintenance. You buy it because it looks good, it offers a bit of protection, and it’s the perfect place to display your patches and club colours. It’s a staple of the riding wardrobe, especially here in Australia where the weather can flip from baking sun to pouring rain in the span of an afternoon ride.

But here is the reality check. A good quality leather vest is an investment. As we all know, leather is a complex natural material. Making sure that it’s kept in perfect condition can indeed be difficult. That’s why we have gathered some proven tips for taking care of your motorcycle vest.

Understanding What You’re Wearing

To take good care of leather, one needs to know its characteristics. Although it is strong and porous, it absorbs exhaust, dust, rain, and sweat. With time, oils evaporate, making it stiff, while dirt settles, damaging the fibers.

Have a look at our Dawson Suede Vest with Black and White Spanish Leather Braiding - It is made from high quality soft cowhide suede leather. There is black and white leather Spanish style braiding around the neck, arms, front and bottom.

The Breaking-In Period

If your vest is brand new, it probably feels a bit stiff. That’s normal. A lot of riders make the mistake of trying to rush this process by soaking it or using harsh chemicals to soften it up. Don't do that.

The best way to break in a vest is just to wear it. Ride in it. Wear it around the house if you have to. The heat from your body and the movement will naturally loosen up the fibers and mold the leather to your shape. It’s a process, not a shortcut.

Cleaning: Getting the Road Off

You get back from a long weekend ride, and your vest is covered in a layer of dust and a graveyard of insects.Don't use harsh solvents or household cleaners like Windex. Those will strip the finish and dry out the leather instantly.

For 90% of cleaning, all you need is a damp cloth. Microfiber is great because it grabs the dust without scratching.

The Wipe Down: Dip your cloth in lukewarm water and wring it out until it’s just damp. Wipe down the entire vest to remove surface dust.

Bug Removal: For dried-on bugs, don’t scrub aggressively. Lay a warm, damp cloth over the spot for a minute or two to rehydrate the mess, then gently wipe it away.

Soap: If it’s really grimy, you can use a specific leather cleaner or a very mild soap (like a gentle baby soap), but use it sparingly. You don’t want soapy residue left behind.

If you have embroidered patches, be careful cleaning around them. Dab them gently if they need cleaning, but try to keep the leather cleaner off the embroidery.

Try Out Rhino’s Mens Denim Style Buffalo Leather Vest with Side Lace - It is made of 100% black leather and is designed to look like a traditional Denim Vest. The vest is double stitched for durability and fully lined with black polyester.

Conditioning: The Lifeblood of Leather

This is the step that separates the vests that last from the ones that die young. Conditioning replaces the lost oils.

Oils (like Neatsfoot): These soak in deep and soften well, but they can darken the leather significantly and sometimes weaken the stitching if used too heavily.

Balms and Creams: These are usually the best bet for vests. They sit on the surface a bit longer and polish up nicely without making the leather feel greasy.

Waxes: Good for waterproofing, but they can build up over time.

How to do it: Wait until your vest is clean and dry. Put a small amount of conditioner on a lint-free cloth (never pour it directly on the leather). Rub it using circular motions, working one panel at a time.

Don’t go crazy. The leather should look rich and hydrated, not wet or sticky. If it feels greasy after ten minutes, you’ve used too much. Wipe off the excess.

Check out our Maverick Buffalo Leather Vest with Metal Clasps - It is made from black buffalo leather and is double stitched for durability

Dealing with Water

Leather is pretty resilient to water, provided you handle the drying process correctly.

If your vest gets soaked:

Hang it up immediately. Use a wide, sturdy hanger.

Let it air dry. This is the golden rule. Do not put it in front of a heater, do not use a hair dryer, and do not throw it in the dryer.

Patience. Rapid heat forces the water out too fast, taking the oils with it. This causes the leather to shrink and warp. Let it dry at room temperature, even if it takes two days.

Once it’s dry, it will probably feel a bit stiff. That’s the time to hit it with a coat of conditioner to restore the flexibility.

Explore Rhino’s Atlas Blue Denim Motorcycle Vest - It is made of 12oz denim 100% durable cotton and keeps you feeling super cool in summer.

Storage: The Silent Killer

Believe it or not, more damage is done in the closet than on the road.

The Hanger: Leather is heavy. If you hang it on a thin wire hanger, the weight will pull down on the shoulders, creating permanent "nipples" in the leather or stretching out the yoke. Invest in a wide, wooden suit hanger or a dedicated heavy-gear hanger.

The Environment: Australia can get humid. If you stick your leather vest in the back of a dark, damp closet and forget about it for six months, you’re going to come back to a science experiment. Mold loves leather. It feeds on organic material.

Store it somewhere with decent airflow. If you use a cover, make sure it’s a breathable cotton bag, never plastic. Plastic traps moisture and promotes mold growth.

A Quick Word on Zippers and Snaps

While you’re caring for the hide, don’t forget the hardware. Metal snaps can corrode, and zippers can seize up with road grime.

A tiny drop of silicone lubricant or even rubbing a pencil tip (graphite) along the zipper teeth can keep things running smoothly. If you see green corrosion starting on your snaps (common near the ocean), brush it off with an old toothbrush and a little baking soda paste before it eats into the metal.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to be a professional detailer to keep your vest alive. It really comes down to common sense. Keep it clean, keep it fed, and don’t cook it.

Your vest tells a story. Every scuff, every fade line, and every patch adds to that story. You want to keep the character, but lose the damage. Treat it with a bit of respect, and it’ll be the last thing you put on before every ride for decades to come.

Ride loud. Ride proud. Protect what represents you.

Choosing Motocap rated Gloves for safety

We’ve all heard the lines before. “Premium quality.” “Top-tier protection.” “The ultimate riding glove.” In the motorcycle industry, marketing departments throw these hollow phrases around like confetti, expecting you to just nod, hand over your cash, and trust them with your skin. But let’s be real—you didn’t get on a motorcycle to be a compliant consumer. You ride because you refuse to live life on standby. You are a challenger. You disrupt the mundane. So why the hell are you settling for generic safety claims when it comes to your gear?

The road doesn't care about your brand loyalty, and the asphalt certainly doesn't care about a flashy logo. The pain point for modern riders is the agonizing guesswork of trying to figure out if a pair of gloves will actually hold up in a slide, or if they’ll shred like tissue paper the second you touch the tarmac. We’re done with the hype. It’s time for proof.

What is MotoCAP and Why Should You Care?

MotoCAP is an independent testing organisation for motorcycle gear .This isn't another industry circle-jerk or a paid brand endorsement. This is strong social proof, specifically because MotoCAP is an independent, government-backed program in Australia.

Their ratings aren't based on how soft the leather feels or how good it looks on Instagram. Their ratings are ruthlessly based on crash-related testing: abrasion resistance, impact protection, and burst resistance/seam strength. That gives you a credible trust angle that is infinitely stronger than any “premium quality” style claim.

When it comes to choosing gloves, MotoCAP specifically rates injury protection rather than breathability. That’s a critical distinction. You can't breathe through a shattered knuckle. We keep our glove messaging intensely focused on protection performance, because that is the only metric that matters when gravity wins.

Proof, Not Hype: The RhinoLeather Standard

The best angle isn’t “we got tested.” Any brand can submit a product. The real power move is offering independently tested protection you can verify yourself.

Riders are naturally skeptical, and rightfully so. We connect our gear to three non-negotiable pillars: independent testing, rider confidence, and direct comparison transparency. MotoCAP exists to help riders compare gear before buying, stripping away the marketing fluff and leaving raw, unfiltered data. We don't want you to buy RhinoLeather gloves just because we made them. We want you to check the rating, see how RhinoLeather performed on MotoCAP, and buy them because the data proves they will save your hands.

Protection without guessing. Trusted by riders who check the data. That’s how you ride with true liberation.

MotoCAP Rated Gloves: Choose Your Weapon

A glove isn’t just a glove. It’s the only thing standing between your hands and the road. To match your riding style, your look, and your demand for verifiable safety, we’ve broken down our MotoCAP-tested lineup so you can choose the exact tool for the job.

Cobra: The Classic Rebel

Love the classic leather look but want independently tested protection? The Cobra is for the rider who refuses to look like a power ranger but still demands modern, scientifically proven defense. With a timeless aesthetic, the Cobra doesn't scream for attention—but its MotoCAP rating does. Built with high-grade abrasion-resistant leather and strategically placed armor, it’s a glove riders can check before they commit. You get the vintage, outlaw silhouette without sacrificing a single ounce of impact protection.

Buy Rhino Cobra Leather Glove - These gloves are fitted with impact protection for the knuckles only. There is no impact protection for the palms. There is no provision for ventilation to allow airflow movement through the glove. This glove is advertised as water-resistant, and so has been tested for water spray and rain resistance according to the MotoCAP test protocols.

Shelby: The Aggressive Challenger

If you ride sport-focused, you need a sport-focused fit, backed by independent testing. The Shelby is built for the riders who push the limits, carve aggressive lines through the twisties, and demand a glove that locks onto their hand like a second skin. Pre-curved fingers, aggressive armor placement, and heavy-duty seam strength make the Shelby a weapon on the track or the canyon. Check the MotoCAP data—it speaks volumes about the Shelby’s ability to take a beating so your palms don't have to.

Check out Rhino Leather Shelby Leather Glove - These gloves are fitted with impact protection for the knuckles and palms. There is no provision for ventilation to allow airflow movement through the glove. A poor wrist restraint score reduced this glove's protection rating from three stars.

Sigma: The Calculated Disruptor

For the rider who wants a short cuff or a highly versatile, modern fit, the Sigma is the answer. Short-cuff gloves are notoriously tricky; they offer less coverage, which means the materials and armor have to work twice as hard. The Sigma was engineered to shatter the notion that short cuffs are unsafe. By submitting the Sigma to MotoCAP, we provide protection data riders can actually compare against bulky, full-length gauntlets. It’s lightweight, it’s disruptive, and it passed the independent crash tests with flying colors.

Try out our RhinoLeather Sigma Leather glove - This glove is fitted with impact protectors for the knuckles and palm areas. There is no provision for ventilation to allow airflow movement through the glove. The gloves were tested for abrasion resistance in accordance with MotoCAP test protocols. This glove has not been advertised as water resistant so has not been tested for water spray and rain resistance.

Healy: The Uncompromising Force

Built for sheer resilience, the Healy is for the rider who views the road as an adversary to be conquered. Rugged, reinforced, and unapologetically tough, the Healy glove focuses heavily on burst resistance and seam strength—the exact metrics MotoCAP uses to simulate the violent tearing forces of a real-world crash. Healy’s independent test score helps you determine whether Healy is right for you by showing you the level of physical evidence that we will not compromise on your safety.

Explore RhinoLeather Healy Leather Gloves - This glove is fitted with impact protectors for the knuckles and palm areas. There is no provision for ventilation to allow airflow movement through the glove. The gloves were tested for abrasion resistance in accordance with MotoCAP test protocols. This glove is advertised as water-resistant, and so has been tested for water spray and rain resistance according to the MotoCAP test protocols.

Compare Before You Buy: Take Control of Your Buying Decisions

It’s time to stop blindly trusting the brand’s marketing. You are powerful, you are free, and you are smarter than to do that anyway. When you are deciding between an urban commute or weekend twisties, or choosing between a classic leather look or a sport fit, the decision should be based on fact, not fiction.

Every time you gear up, you are making a contract with the road. Make sure your side of the bargain is backed by independent testing. We encourage you to visit MotoCAP. Look at the abrasion scores. Look at the impact protection data. See how RhinoLeather performed against the competition.

Choose independently tested motorcycle gear. Choose protection you can compare before you buy. Choose RhinoLeather—because true riders don't just talk about safety, they verify it.

You didn’t get on a motorcycle to blend in. You ride because you refuse to be caged by a nine-to-five, a mortgage, and a mundane existence. You crave the raw, unfiltered liberation that only comes when the throttle hits the stop and the world blurs into your periphery. You are a challenger. You disrupt the ordinary.

But there is a massive lie running rampant in this industry, and it should piss off every rider on the road. It’s the lie of "premium quality."

Corporate clothing brands slap a fancy logo on a thin fashion jacket, call it "motorcycle gear," and expect you to gamble your skin on their marketing budget. They use vague buzzwords and fluffy claims, hoping you’ll hand over your money and trust them with your life. That’s not power; that’s submission.

We know your pain points because we live them too. You want gear that looks as aggressive, rebellious, and powerful as your ride. But deep down, you harbor a dark paranoia. You wonder if the second you slide across the asphalt, that overpriced jacket is going to disintegrate. You feel forced to choose between looking incredible and actually walking away from a crash. You want proof, not hype.

Proof, Not Hype: Why MotoCAP is the Ultimate Disruptor

To break free from the marketing BS, you need a disruptor. You need an authority that doesn't care about brand budgets. Enter MotoCAP.

MotoCAP isn’t some paid-off influencer or a glossy magazine award. MotoCAP is an independent, government-backed testing organization in Australia built for one singular reason: to see what actually happens when your gear hits the deck. They don’t care about how soft the leather feels in the showroom. They test for crash survival.

MotoCAP’s ratings are based on brutal, crash-related testing: abrasion resistance, impact protection, and burst resistance and seam strength. When you hit the road at speed, the asphalt acts like a giant belt sander, and the force of impact puts massive stress on the seams holding your armor in place. MotoCAP simulates this. They exist to help riders compare gear before buying, making them the ultimate antidote to an industry built on blind trust.

Try out Rhino Leather Torque P005 leather jacket -This garment is fitted with impact protectors for the elbows, shoulders and back. Replacing the elbow and

shoulder armour with higher performing impact protectors would improve the protection levels of this

garment.

Independently Tested Protection You Can Verify Yourself

At RhinoLeather, we don’t hide behind generic safety claims. We embrace the disruption. We built our gear to be worn by riders who refuse to compromise, and then we handed it over to an independent testing organization to be put through the wringer. Why? Because true power comes from rider confidence, and confidence only comes from direct comparison transparency.

The best angle in motorcycle safety isn’t "we got tested." The best angle is giving you independently tested protection you can verify yourself.

We don’t say "trust us." We say, "verify us." We offer protection data riders can actually compare. This is protection without guessing. When you are choosing Motocap rated jackets for safety, you are stripping away the industry's smoke and mirrors. You are looking at cold, hard, independent testing.

Explore Rhino Leather Brando leather jacket - This garment is fitted with impact protectors for the elbows and shoulders. A pocket is provided for an

aftermarket back protector.

Born for the Twisties: Torque and Speedster

If you’re the kind of rider who lives for the weekend twisties, who pushes the limits of grip and gravity, and who treats the throttle like an on/off switch, you need gear that matches your intensity. The Torque and Speedster jackets are engineered for the sport-oriented rider.

These aren’t just stylish cuts of leather; they are highly structured defense systems. With a sport-focused fit, pre-curved sleeves, and aggressive aerodynamic styling, these jackets are built to stay exactly where they need to be during a high-speed tumble. Independently tested by MotoCAP, the Torque and Speedster deliver the heavy-duty impact protection and severe abrasion resistance required for high-velocity riding. MotoCAP's data proves that when the friction heat turns up, these jackets hold their structural integrity. You ride powerful; your gear should be backed by independent testing that proves it can keep up.

Check Rhino Leathers Ace leather jacket - This garment is fitted with impact protectors for the elbows and shoulders. A pocket is provided for an aftermarket back protector.

Heritage Without the Sacrifice: The Ace and Brando7

Maybe your rebellion looks a little different. Maybe you’re a heritage purist. You despise the plastic, neon, power-ranger aesthetic that dominates modern sportbike gear. You want the classic leather look—the kind of jacket that screams counter-culture and timeless rebellion, like something Steve McQueen would have thrown a leg over. But you flat-out refuse to sacrifice your body for a vintage vibe.

Love the classic leather look but want independently tested protection? This is your answer. The Ace and Brando bring a stripped-down, disruptive silhouette to the street, but beneath that vintage exterior is modern, armor-backed defense.

These jackets have been put through the exact same rigorous MotoCAP burst/seam strength and abrasion testing as our sport jackets. When those seams are stressed against the tarmac, MotoCAP’s data proves they hold tight, keeping your impact protectors exactly where they need to be. You don’t have to look like a tech-wear astronaut to survive a crash. You can stay true to your disruptive style and still wear gear trusted by riders who check the data.

Find out Rhino Leather Speedstar leather jacket - This garment is fitted with impact protectors for the elbows and shoulders. A pocket is provided for an

aftermarket back protector.

Compare Before You Buy: Take Back Your Confidence

When it comes to choosing Motocap rated jackets for safety, don’t fall for generic search engine bait claiming to sell the "best jacket in Australia." Look for precise phrasing. Look for brands that proudly state their gear is "Independently tested by MotoCAP."

Before you drop your hard-earned cash on your next piece of riding gear, go to the MotoCAP website. See how RhinoLeather performed on MotoCAP. Compare before you buy. Look at the abrasion times in seconds. Look at the impact force ratings in kilonewtons. Look at how the seams hold up under burst pressure. This is how you take control of your own safety. This is how you ride truly liberated.

Final Words

The road doesn’t care about your Instagram aesthetic. It only cares about physics. But you have a choice in how you face that reality. You can gamble on unverified promises, or you can gear up with independently tested motorcycle gear. You can throw a leg over your bike wearing the Torque, Speedster, The Ace, or Brando7, knowing that an independent, government-backed program put them through the worst-case scenario so you don’t have to find out the hard way.

Stop guessing. Start comparing. Shop MotoCAP-tested RhinoLeather jackets, because protection you can compare before you buy is the only kind of protection worth wearing.

Listen up. You didn't buy a bike to follow rules. You bought it to break them. You bought it to feel the asphalt blur beneath you, to scream into the void, and to leave the cage-drivers eating your dust. But there's one rule even the most hardened outlaw respects: The road always wins.

If you go down—and if you ride hard enough, eventually you might—your hands are the first thing to hit the pavement. It’s instinct. You put them out to break your fall. Without the right gear, the road acts like a belt sander on your skin. That’s not a badge of honor; that’s a one-way ticket to never gripping a throttle again.

Today, we’re cutting through the marketing fluff and talking about what actually matters when buying motorcycle gloves.

The Pain of the Wrong Gear

We’ve all been there. You buy cheap motorbike gloves because they look cool on a shelf. Two hours into a ride, your hands are numb. The seams are digging into your knuckles like knives. You can’t feel the clutch. You’re distracted.

Or maybe you went for style over substance with some flimsy fashion leather. Then the rain hits. Now you’re riding with two wet sponges attached to your wrists, freezing your fingers until they lock up. That’s not freedom. That’s misery.

Real riders know that biker gloves aren't accessories. They are essential tools for survival. They are the connection between your will and the machine.

What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Don't just throw money at the first pair of leather motorcycle gloves you see. You need armor. You need a second skin. Here is the no-bullshit guide to choosing gloves that fit your ride and your attitude.

1.Comfort: The "Fit Like a Glove" Cliché Exists for a Reason

Let’s get one thing straight: if they don’t fit, they’re trash.

Comfort isn't about being cozy; it's about control. At the very least, you need to ensure that a motorcycle glove is the right size. "Fit like a glove" is an old saying for a very good reason, as wrong-sized gloves will always prove to be a headache—and a safety hazard.

2.Too Big: Big gloves will wrap around the bar, bunching up in your palm. It destroys your tactile feedback. You grab the brake, and you get a handful of leather instead of stopping power.

3.Too Tight: If they're too tight, it means you'll have the inability to flex your fingers. You’ll get cramps within twenty minutes. You’ll lose circulation. You’ll lose the ability to react fast when that sedan cuts you off.

4.The Test: Put them on. Make a fist. Grip an imaginary throttle. If the tips of your fingers are jamming against the end, size up. If you can pinch an inch of fabric at the fingertips, size down. You want them snug, aggressive, and ready for action.

Construction: Armor for Your Hands

You aren't knitting a sweater; you're tearing up the highway. Your gear needs to be tougher than you are.

Leather Motorcycle Gloves: The classic. The gold standard. Cowhide, goatskin, kangaroo. Leather will protect your palms during a fall, and will protect them from friction burns. It molds to your hand over time, becoming a part of you.

Textile/Mesh: These are often used for summer motorcycle gloves. They offer better airflow but need high-denier fabrics (like Cordura) to save your skin.

But material isn't enough. Gloves must also have reinforcements such as extra padding on the palms and knuckles. Look for hard armor—carbon fiber or TPU knuckle guards. You want something that can punch a mirror off a car if you had to (not that we’re suggesting it, but you get the vibe). Look for double stitching in high-impact zones. If the stitching looks weak, walk away.

Lining and Insulation: Master the Elements

You ride in the real world, not a studio. The wind, the rain, the biting cold—they are your enemies.

Lining and Insulation are your defense systems. Did you know you could buy glove liners separately? Yep, some gloves allow you to take out the lining and dunk it in your washing machine to work out the grime. This can be beneficial, especially after a long ride where you've been sweating grit and gasoline.

The Wind Factor: As the wind is something every rider needs to tackle, your glove's lining will influence the temperature of your hands since wind has a habit of getting into your gloves through the fingertips and seams.

The Cold: Good lining will keep your hands warm especially on those early winter mornings when the frost is still on the ground. Look for Thinsulate or thermal liners if you ride year-round.

The Heat: For summer motorcycle gloves, you want moisture-wicking liners that pull sweat away from your skin, keeping your grip dry and locked in.

The Style of Rebellion

You don't want to look like a Power Ranger, and you definitely don't want to look like a commuter on a scooter. You want gear that screams attitude.

Whether you rock a vintage café racer, a murdered-out cruiser, or a streetfighter, your gloves complete the look. If you're wearing well-worn leather biking gloves with poor quality and lots of duct tape, it's obvious you aren't just riding shotgun. Your hands are also showing off their battle scars from protecting you on your ride.

Don't just settle for the standard issue biker gloves. Find the right gloves that will help finish off your look and tell the story of where your hands have been!

The Verdict

Buying gloves isn't a chore; it's an investment in your lifestyle. It’s about refusing to let the elements or the asphalt dictate your ride. It’s about taking control.

You are powerful. You are liberated. Don't let a little road rash take that away from you. Gear up, grip tight, and ride like you stole it.

Look, nobody gets on a bike cause it's the safe option right? We ride because there's nothing like it - the feeling of twisting the throttle on the Great Ocean Road or carving through back roads, it's addictive as hell.

But here's the thing - you're also way more exposed than someone in a car. One mistake and you're in serious trouble. I've lost mates who thought they were invincible so I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. Jack Haley from NRMA says the right equipment saves lives and he's right but there's more to it than just gear

Maintain Your Bike Properly

Seriously this is a boring one but it's important. Worn tyres will lose grip when you don't expect it - usually in a corner when you're already leaning. Brakes are the same, if their spongy or making weird noises get them checked.

I'm not mechanically minded so I just take mine to a mechanic every 6 months or so. Costs a bit but way cheaper than getting stranded in the middle of nowhere or worse, having something fail when you're doing 100.

Regular maintenance also means you won't break down far from home which sucks trust me.

You can try Sons of Anarchy V-Neck Leather Vest – Iconic Motorcycle Club Style - A must-have for any motorcycle enthusiast. Crafted from premium buffalo leather, this vest exudes rugged durability and timeless style, making it the perfect addition to your riding gear or casual wardrobe. Designed with functionality in mind, it offers ample storage and a sleek, streamlined fit that ensures both comfort and edge.

Learn Your Bikes Features

Modern bikes have ABS and traction control and all that. Don't wait till you're in an emergency to figure out how it works. Go find a quiet road and actually test your ABS so you know what that juddering feeling is when it kicks in.

Traction control - yeah you can turn it off but unless you really know what you're doing when the rear steps out, just leave it on. It's there for a reason.

Wear Proper Gear

I know it's hot and you're only going to the shops but wear the gear. The road doesn't care if it's a short trip.

Look for CE rated armour at least you know it's been tested. Some gear even has abrasion testing now which is good cause that's what takes your skin off.

Don't ride to work in normal clothes and think you'll be fine - take 2 mins to change when you get there. Good gear also keeps you comfortable which means you ride better.

Try our Leather Motorcycle Gauntlet Gloves with Rain Cover and Pocket - Touchscreen

Rhinoleather's black winter motorbike gloves made from Premium Leather Cowhide features reinforced palm and zip pockets for small personal belongings. These motorcycle gloves will protect from rain by the cover while riding a motorcycle in Australia.

Be Visible

Drivers genuinely do not see us. All black gear on a black bike looks cool but makes you invisible specially at night.

Get some reflective stuff or hi vis. I resisted for ages cause it looks daggy but after nearly getting cleaned up by a car pulling out I gave up on looking cool. Your headlight should be aimed properly to - check it.

Put on Brando Classic Motorcycle Jacket with Armour & Vents - Designed with many useful features. This jacket is made from 100% 1.1-1.3mm black leather, strong and yet super soft and comfortable. The jacket comes with a removable quilted black polyester liner for added strength, durability, comfort and warmth.

Scan Way Ahead

You need to be looking like 5 seconds ahead minimum. The dark patch on the road could be oil, that thing that looks like a bag might be a rock, brake lights everywhere means traffic is stopping.

Can't see far enough ahead? Slow down. You need to be able to stop in the distance you can see clearly. There's some good vids on Ride to Live about spotting hazards.

Look Where You Want to Go

The bike goes where you look - if you're staring at the thing you want to avoid, you'll probably hit it. Look past the hazard to where you wanna be.

Want to enjoy the view? Actually pull over and look at it dont try doing it while riding.

Use Rhinoleather’s Motorcycle Protective Leggings made protective aramid fibres - These Protective Motorcycle Leggings are ideal to keep safe and warm on your rides. Made from breathable material, they are practical & comfortable to wear under any pants.

Give hazards space

Road workers, parked cars, dogs on the side of the road - give it all plenty of room. Just assume everything's trying to kill you.

Cornering

Try to stay towards the middle of your lane in corners. Keeps you away from oncoming traffic on right handers and away from the broken edge on left handers.

Start wide, look for the apex then finish tight but not right on the edge. You might need that extra room if something goes wrong.

Following distance

At least 3 seconds behind the car in front. Not just for the braking room but so you can see past them and know what's coming up earlier.

Wet or gravel? Make it more.

Don't get complacent

Even if you ride the same route everyday, stay alert. I nearly got taken out on my regular commute by a truck that wasn't normally there. Autopilot mode is dangerous.

Keep learning

Do refresher courses even if you've been riding for years. I did one last year thinking I'd ace it and learned heaps - realized I'd been doing some things wrong forever.

Roadside assistance

Get it. When something breaks you'll be glad you did.

That's it - stay safe out there.

Final Words

Riding comes with a lot of risks. But that’s the deal we accept for freedom. However , smart riders take this chance with skill , awareness and the proper motorcycle gear.

At Rhino Leather , we make gear for Aussie riders who refuse to ride soft. From motorcycle jackets to tough gloves and pants , this protection is built with attitude.

Stay alert , Stay Protected. Keep riding.

Gear up now at Rhino Leather and ride like you mean it.

It is one of the most common dilemmas faced by motorcycle riders. Style or safety? Leather or Textile? Identity or budget? This discussion might go on and on.There is no perfect jacket for a person. Choosing which material suits your outdoor escapades is a decision any rider would have to make at one point in their lives.

Out on the highway , a jacket isn’t optional . It's like your second skin. It's your armor to protect you and give you comfort at the same time.Whether you’re searching for a Rhino leather jacket, a Rhino leather vest, or modern textile motorcycle jackets, the choice is of course personal.Additionally, your jacket fits your own sense of identity and riding requirements and the type of bike you own.

Still facing trouble ? Here are a few things you need to consider.

1. Durability & Safety

Let’s get one thing straight—safety is non-negotiable.

When you get off the bike, style won’t get you out of trouble. Materials will.

A good motorcycle jacket must have CE-approved armor in the elbows and on the back. This isn’t just marketing hype. This is the difference between walking away and being carried away.

Textile jackets tend to work well on the first impact. But let’s face it—they tend to rip or come apart after the first serious crash. That’s replacement time. Again. And again.

Leather, on the other hand, is a whole different animal.

A good biker leather jacket for men that motorcycle riders trust is made for war. Leather will absorb the impact, resist abrasion, and withstand a slide that would rip textile to shreds instantly. A good leather jacket will last for years, even after a minor crash.

For ultimate protection, the thickness of the leather must be at least 1.2 mm. When it comes to safety, the best leather motorcycle jackets for men still lead the pack.

2. Dollar Factor

Let’s speak about money - even rebellion has its expenses. In a perfect world you might have multiple jackets based on weather. One for summer and the other might be for winter or rain. Wild rides can also glorify the list but most bikers are grounded in reality. Textile jackets are cheaper and come in high or low quality variation. They do offer decent protection for daily riders and commuters but they might have a short lifespan. On the other hand, leather jackets may burn a hole in your pocket , so they are not always affordable. But there is a kicker - it is usually a one time expense.Instead of replacing the worn out textile one, a solid leather jacket keeps giving back. Both will give you value in terms of safety. Make sure you check the quality of textile used (ie600 Denier Cordura) or thickness Leather (1.2mm + leather). Best not to go for ultra soft sheep skin or Analine jacket as they will disintegrate the first time you hit the gravel. Buffalo or cowhide is best.

Spend wisely. Not flashy.

3. Sense of Identity

Your jacket is more than just equipment. It’s a statement.

Leather is the epitome of rebellion. It has history. It has grit. It has an attitude. A Rhino leather jacket or men’s leather jackets Australia bikers rave about isn’t about being trendy; it’s about heritage. It’s timeless. It’s vintage. It’s unbridled.

Textile jackets are all about being contemporary. They’re urban. They’re tactical. They’re sleek. They’re aggressive. They’re high visibility.

Both are available in a variety of colors, patterns, and reflective strips. But only one will be an extension of you.

If your jacket doesn’t reflect your attitude, it’s the wrong jacket.

4. Weather Conditions

The wild roads don't care about your comfort. The weather keeps on changing at a quick pace. But you don’t. Textile motorcycle jackets try to dominate when it comes to ventilation . Zip panels , mesh vents , breathable liners - they are mainly suitable for hot weather conditions. If you stay in a warm climatic zone or ride everyday, then textile wins the show. Leather is heavier as well as hotter. It's less forgiving in summer , even with perforations. But during cold weather leather shines. It blocks chilly winds , traps the heat and keeps you steady at speed.Rain might change the game completely. Textile jackets are waterproof or have rain liners whereas leather ones can absorb water , become firm and take a longer time to dry up.

Always select based on where and how you ride - not wishful thinking.

Try our Storm Motorcycle Rain Jacket Black - Rhinoleather's Storm rain jacket is an ultra-lightweight rain jacket that fits quickly over any riding jacket.

5. Comfort and Fit

An ill-fitting jacket is a problem.

Leather conforms to your body. It fits close, holds armor in the right places, and moves with you. This close fit becomes invaluable when things go south.

Textile jackets are lighter and more bulky. They are more flexible and adjustable with straps and panels. For daily commutes or adventure rides, this flexibility is important.

Comfort is not just about being soft. It is about being in control, feeling confident, and having no distractions at speed.

Check our Vintage Brando Brown Motorcycle Jacket with Armour & Vents - This jacket is made from 100% 1.1-1.3mm brown leather, which is strong, yet soft. The jacket comes with a removable quilted black polyester liner for added strength, durability, comfort and warmth.

Speed is the game changer. Leather makes sense if you are a fast rider. It keeps you warm , focused and provides stability.Textile jackets mainly suit commuters and urban riders , prioritising agility over speed. For the most part, any motorcycle jacket you purchase will be a compromise. You have to create a hierarchy of features that are most or least important for you. In order to be comfortable, there are corresponding trade offs for each.

You can go for Speedster Black Leather Motorcycle Jacket - Full Grain Leather - It seamlessly combines classic aesthetics with modern functionality.

The Soundtrack of the Open Road

There is the age old saying, ‘why fix something that aint broke?’

Well, my friend, because it makes it more fun, that's why.

Motorcycles are not quiet at the best of times, but adding extra rumble to that exhaust just flips a switch, it ignites a flame of attitude and boldness. Before you are even in anyone's view, every living being within 5Ks will know you are coming. Sleeping babies will wake and car alarms set off. Heads turn and you get noticed. What are these people thinking? Who cares.

But how loud is too loud and are we justified to make this noise. Let's find out how our loud pipes make a difference and what regulations there are.

Why Riders Love Loud Pipes

Every twist of that throttle gives riders such a thrill. Its telling people, “I'm here and I live loud”. Depending on the change, the bike will even perform better with more airflow.

Making your pipes more vocal will give you such a rush when riding. That sound just hits your chest. And it is now personal; this motorbike is now unique and it's just for you.

But let's not get the love of loud motorcycles mixed with ego. Even the most introverted people have the loudest bikes. It is their happy place and brings out their best in confidence and performance.

It just sounds cool.

Do Loud Pipes Really Save Lives? The Safety Debate

“Loud Pipes Save Lives”. Is this true or is it just something a bunch of rebels told the cops? The answer- Yes. Definitely Yes.

We also know that drivers also say, “I just didn't see them”.

Cars will change lanes, stop suddenly and even turn around roundabouts and just not see us. Loud pipes will surely let them know you are around. If they can't see you, they will hear you. Heads turn when there is a loud noise, you will make yourself noticed which will then bring attention to the driver. That lane change they were suddenly going to do will have to wait, there is a bad biker coming up.

Of course, there are negative people that say the loud pipes make more of a noise behind the bike, so drivers in front may not actually be alerted to your presence.

Yeah, I don't think so. Its damn loud.

How Loud Is Too Loud? Understanding Maximum Volume Limits

Ok, so here’s the part where eye rolling is acceptable. There are noise regulations in Australia. Noise restrictions are quite serious and if our exhausts are exceeding the noise limit, we are looking at some pretty hefty fines or even a defect notice.

Generally, the maximum allowable noise level for motorcycles depends on the age of the bike:

Motorcycles built before 1985: up to around 100 decibels (dB).

Motorcycles built after 1985: typically limited to around 94–96 dB when tested.

In Layman's terms, a conversation is 60dB, a lawnmower is around 90dB, and a rock concert is about 110dB. So, if you are worried that your bike can't be loud enough, you should be ok as it's not far off a rock concert.

It is tempting to gut the muffler and go for max volume but it's just not worth it. Police will use noise meters to test the bikes and groups of bikes can be targets. So, if you think you can hide your loud exhaust amongst your fellow riders, think again. You may be looking at a defect and losing a nice chunk of money.

The Balance Between Power, Performance, and Respect

A well-tuned exhaust can do wonders for your bike's performance. The exhaust can even weigh less. You may be getting a better performance with an awesome authoritative sound, but you need to still respect other road users and most importantly, your neighbours.
There are different sounds you can achieve with your pipes. There are deep rumble sounds or there is the loud cracking sound that will break windows. Whatever you prefer, you need to have balance.

Now adays, it is possible to achieve the sound you prefer but still be in the regulation zone. Performance exhausts can offer Slip-on mufflers, baffled pipes or even variable exhaust systems. These work by having adjustable components inside the muffler such as valves that will open, close or change the length of the path depending on the RPMs.

You be quieter in traffic and a loud beast on open roads.

Living Loud — The Culture Behind the Sound

Loud pipes are part of a rider's atmosphere. It just comes naturally. At any Bike rallies or meetups, it's something that us riders love to hear.

Loud pipes are a story on their own. Night rides on quiet streets are quickly made into a memory of thrills.

Keeping the culture of loud powerful bikes strong, depends on still being respectful and mindful of others. Unleashing your pipes doesn't mean disrupting the law.

(Unless you hate your neighbours but that's a whole ‘nother article.)

There are different sounds you can achieve with your pipes. There are deep rumble sounds or there is the loud cracking sound that will break windows. Whatever you prefer, you need to have balance.

If you are a rider reading this, you will know what I mean.

You are riding or driving along, and you know that car Infront of you is going to change lanes. There is no indicator and no sign they will do it, you just know they will do it. You are cautious because you don't want your front end taken out, and lucky you were because there it is, they changed. They changed with no blinker and no warning.

This is a very small example of the daily intuitions us riders have every time we hit the road. Are we Superman? I'd like to think so, but unfortunately it just comes down to experience, pattern recognition, and focus.

Our ‘Sixth Sense’ gets more in tune the more you ride, and our supernatural power will stay with us.

How We Get a Sixth Sense

As learners, when we first start riding, we are so focused on not falling off. The basics of balance, braking, cornering, throttle control and gear changing is what we are concentrating on. Then we get confident and all these basics are automatic, without thinking. So, our brain has more space to see what else is happening around us.

This is when the ‘Sixth Sense’ is born.

Here are a very few examples of what riders pick up on-

A driver's head may turn a little indicating a possible lane change.

A cars wheel angle can mean a sudden lane change.

Flickering brake lights indicate slow traffic ahead.

A slight body movement from a parked car shows a possibility of a car door opening.

Uneven spacing in traffic is an indication of possible cars suddenly changing lanes.

No eye contact with a driver means they have not seen you.

Birds rustling in a bush or side of the road means they can dart across at any time.

Due to pattern recognition and muscle memory, our bodies now pick up on sounds, vibration and visual motions. You won't even notice you are doing it, but your eyes and ears are automatically sensing everything around.

The Phenomenon in a Motorcyclist’s Sixth Sense

True riders will understand that the ‘sixth sense’ is actually a thing. Other road users are completely unaware of this instinct that you have even when it happens right in front of their eyes. It may look or feel like coincidence or luck but that is far from the truth.

If you have ever felt and experienced that ‘sixth sense’ come through and it potentially saved your life, you may not have even realised that your subconscious took over when it noticed alarm bells.

Riders are always on alert. We are exposed and vulnerable every second. Due to this alertness and overload of sensors, we gain a heightened perception of what is around us. With experience, our brain is rewired to naturally process any threats or red flags on the road.

Science Behind the Sixth Sense

Neuroscience is backing us crazy riders up. It's not in our heads. Science has discovered that Situational Awareness (understand what is currently happening so you can anticipate and respond to potential dangers before they happen) and Neural Adaption (Brain adjusts to repeated experiences therefore processing information faster and responding more efficiently) go hand in hand to make the ‘Sixth Sense’.

When we ride, our brain handles a lot of information such as balance, sound, speed etc. This strengthens the brains capability of reaction times and predictions. Riders are basically training their brains.

You may notice that you respond to a situation before you have even thought or processed what the situation is. When you are exposed to risky situations nearly every day, your brain is secretly taking notes.

Just like studying for an exam or an athlete training for a run, repetition strengthens the brain as well as the body.

The Bond Between Rider, Machine, and Road

When you get off the bike after a long ride, you aren't walking funny to amuse the neighbours, it's because the bike is a part of us. We feel every vibration and bump; we lean into every corner and feel every gear.

The ‘Sixth Sense’ isn't only about other road users, it's also about what your bike tells you. Your bike is a part of you, and you can feel when something is iffy. The handlebars may feel different due to traction changes; riding may become unstable in crosswinds, you know your bike, so listening to its hints will give you an opportunity to change your surroundings.

Being in the zone when riding a motorcycle is a true connection between you and your steel horse. The sixth sense is heightened during this stage as you are fully connected with the elements of you, your bike and the road.

Conclusion: Trust the Instinct, Respect the Ride

So, there it is, it's not luck or coincidence, it's the instincts you gain for being a great rider. You are a natural and now your brain wants more and it's giving its best to you.

You have heard the saying ‘Trust your Instincts’ so go with it.

Your ‘Sixth Sense’ is Superhuman and not many have the privilege to own it.
